Georgia is getting a new minor league soccer team. In August it was announced that Premier Development League franchise would be coming to Statesboro and begin play in 2016.
The fledgling franchise now has it's identity. It was announced on Wednesday that South Georgia Tormenta FC will be the name of the new club.
A description of how the name came to be and it's origins are quite fascinating:
Tormenta, was chosen from almost 200 names. It's Spanish for storm, representing the tormenting the club will bring to its opponents and the intense force of nature its players seek to display.
Team President Darin Van Tassel attempted to describe what the team's logo (that can be seen here) looks like.
"The centerpiece of that logo is the Ibis which is a bird that is everywhere around here," said Darin Van Tassel, Tormenta FC Team President. 'But the part I really like is the Ibis is the first animal that comes back after the storm is over, but is the last to retreat when a storm begins."
Tormenta FC will play their home matches at Georgia Southern's soccer field and will start their season in May. You can visit the club's official website at http://www.tormentafc.com/
