Brian Straus of Sports Illustrated has reported today that several sources have told him that Atlanta United FC will be the name of Atlanta's MLS soccer franchise. Atlanta United FC, if made official, will be the 21st MLS team to join the league and will have its inaugural season in 2017.

On July 7th there is a scheduled announcement event, open to Founding Members, in which the front office staff including President Darren Eales and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra will officially announce the teams name and logo.

Atlanta will be joining DC United and Minnesota United, who join MLS in 2018, to choose a team name involving "United". Though a popular name for teams across Europe including the world famous Manchester United Football Club, Atlanta United FC was not one of the most popular team names in polls released by the club and Terminus Legion, an Atlanta soccer supporter's group.

Regardless, the United name leaves infinite possibilities in how the club wants to brand itself. We would not be limited to any nickname, mascot, or logo designs.

The logo is to be unveiled on July 7th and expected to include some color combination of red, gold, and black and feature prominent ‘A'.

On the invitation to the event the headline was "One Night. One Team. One Celebration to Remember" which could be a link to the United team name.
