The unbeaten run for Atlanta United’s U16 and U18 teams continued over the weekend in Florida as both teams faced Boca United FC on Saturday and Orlando City on Sunday.
On Saturday, the U16 team won 3-1 on goals by Liam Butts, Dawson Gideon, and Michael Johnson. James Brighton scored in the first half on Sunday against Orlando, but the Lions fought back to earn a 1-1 draw. It was the first time the squad dropped points so far in U.S. Development Academy play in 2016. Brighton’s goal put him at the top of the scoring charts in the nation.
The U18’s brought two wins back from Florida. Cheik Fofana scored twice in United’s 4-2 win on Saturday against Boca. Bryce Washington’s first half goal was all Atlanta needed in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Orlando City. The loss was the Lions’ first this season.
The highlight of the weekend for the academy squads might have been before they even left Atlanta:
Charlie Asensio, Andrew Carleton, Chris Goslin, and Zyen Jones were part of the U.S. U17 team that won two games against Costa Rica in the last few days. Saturday’s 3-1 win saw Carleton start and play 90 minutes and Goslin notch an assist as a substitute. Carleton and Jones added assists in Monday’s 4-0 victory.

Next weekend, the U13’s and U14’s will take part in the East Regional showcase in Winston Salem, North Carolina. They will face their first MLS academy competition in Philadelphia (U13 & U14), New York Red Bulls (U13), and New York City (U14).
