Today, Major League Soccer released the protected lists submitted by each team ahead of Tuesday’s Expansion Draft for Atlanta United and Minnesota United.
“We’re just going to take the players that we think best can help us strengthen the pieces we already have,” Atlanta United’s Paul McDonough said.
Each existing club was able to protect eleven players. Generation adidas players and Homegrown players on a club’s reserve/supplemental roster are exempt from the draft and do not have to be protected.
Current clubs can only lose one player in this year’s Expansion Draft. Once a player is selected from a team, the rest of that team’s players are automatically removed from the draft list.
Teams will have three minutes to make a selection during the draft. No trades are permitted during the draft, but teams will be able to make trades following the draft’s conclusion. For example, Portland drafted Dax McCarty with the first pick in the 2010 Expansion Draft and traded him to D.C. United immediately following the draft.
