The year was 2007. Major League Soccer was in its awkward adolescent years. Most matches were played on awful turf with football lines and filmed with potatoes. A budding New England Revolution defender by the name of Michael Parkhurst scores the goal of his life from the midway line a la David Beckham against Wimbledon:
Ten years after that glorious strike, Parkhurst will be lining up for Atlanta United and could very well be their captain.
The 32-year-old defender was acquired by Atlanta on Sunday and looks to be a huge part of the club’s inaugural back line. Just because he’s a center back doesn’t mean he can’t pull of the occasional spectacular moment as this proves. Hopefully we see some moments of brilliance like this in the Red, Black, and Gold.
