This morning, Georgia Soccer Executive Director told Dirty South Soccer, “There is an ownership group in Atlanta looking to bring a NASL team and NWSL team into Atlanta.” The composition of this ownership group is currently unknown. Franchises have not been awarded to the ownership group yet.
Nipun Chopra wrote last week that the NASL group was in the process of trying to find an appropriate stadium. Atlanta has been mentioned by both Chopra and Sports Illustrated’s Brian Straus as a potential home for a new NASL franchise. Currently, the NASL is in a state of upheaval with teams leaving the league and battling financial issues.
Yesterday, the Atlanta Silverbacks pledged their future to the NPSL and presumably would not be involved in a return to the NASL. The Atlanta Chiefs trademark is owned by the NASL and has been mentioned as a possible name for the new team.
In May, a location was considered in DeKalb County in conjunction with the Atlanta Sports Connection. However, if a team is to get started quickly, an existing venue would be necessary.
