Welcome to the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Tonight, the North American Soccer League's American teams enter the tournament. Winners in this round will move on to face Major League Soccer competition on June 15.
Atlanta United's USL affiliate, the Charleston Battery, remain alive in the tournament after advancing due to a forfeit by The Villages FC for using an ineligible player. The biggest story in the tournament this year so far has been the registration issues that have seen five teams field ineligible players.
Here's the matches we'll be keeping tabs on tonight. Join us in the comments with your thoughts on tonight's action.
Jacksonville Armada vs. Charleston Battery -- 7:00pm -- Video
Jacksonville made their Open Cup debut last year in a disconcerting 3-0 shutout loss in Richmond to the Kickers. The Battery enter this match after a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Louisville City last weekend. However, Charleston could be considered favorites tonight since the Armada have only scored once in their last five games.
Rochester Rhinos vs. Lansdowne Bhoys -- 7:00pm
The Landsdowne Bhoys are one of the Cinderella stories of this year's tournament. The NY Cosmopolitan League powers went to Pittsburgh in the last round and shocked the USL's Riverhounds 2-0. Since their launch in 1996, Rochester has never lost to a team from a lower league in Open Cup play. The winners advance to face the New York Red Bulls.
Chattanooga FC vs. Harrisburg City Islanders -- 7:30pm -- Video
Last year, Chattanooga defeated the Islanders' USL rivals Wilmington in penalties in the Second Round. The Atlanta Silverbacks eliminated Chattanooga in the following round. Harrisburg was also eliminated at this stage of the tournament last year, losing in penalties to Rochester.
Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. FC Cincinnati -- 7:30pm -- Video
Joe Cole will hoping to lift his Rowdies to a match-up with the Columbus Crew in the Fourth Round. The Rowdies are hosting new USL club FC Cincinnati, led by US national team legend John Harkes. Harkes lifted the Open Cup as a player with DC United in 1996.
Indy Eleven vs. Louisville City FC -- 7:30pm -- Audio
These teams also met in the Third Round last year. Louisville won 2-0 after extra time to advance. Both teams are in the midst of strong 2016 seasons. Louisville sits on top of the USL after a 2-0 win on the road in Charleston last weekend. Indy has not lost yet in NASL play this season and are sitting in second place with a 3-5-0 record.
Miami FC vs. Wilmington Hammerheads -- 8:00pm -- Video
Miami has endured a tough start to life in the NASL but has been investing heavily in recent weeks to turn it around. Buying Richie Ryan and Michael Lahoud signifies their intent to be a stronger team than their 1-3-4 record. Wilmington advanced to the Third Round after demolishing the NPSL's Miami Fusion 5-0.
Rayo OKC vs. Oklahoma City Energy -- 8:00pm -- Video
This might be the game of the night as the NASL and USL meet to determine who advances from Oklahoma City. The Energy survived an epic penalty kick shootout in the Second Round with the PDL's Mississippi Brilla. Former Silverbacks goalkeeper CJ Cochran converted the winning kick. Cochran will be facing former Silverbacks teammates Rauwshan McKenzie and Kosuke Kimura who suit up for Rayo OKC.
La Maquina vs. Los Angeles Wolves -- 10:00pm
Two of a last full amateur teams face off against each other with a chance to face the LA Galaxy on the line. La Maquina defeated the PDL Portland Timbers U23's and the NPSL's Sacramento Gold to get here. The Wolves advanced after a First Round forfeit by Ventura County Fusion and a penalty shootout win over the USL's Orange County Blues in the Second Round.
