28-year-old striker Nicklas Bendtner could be the first major signing for Atlanta United, according to Univision.

He recently left Bundesliga club Wolfsburg after his contract was terminated with immediate effect on April 25. Bendtner signed a three year deal prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. He scored twice in 13 Bundesliga appearances last season.

According to Univision's report, Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra has made contact with Bendtner's management to inquire about his services.

Bendtner made his professional debut with Arsenal in 2005 and remained on the books at the London club through the end of the 2013-14 season. He spent two of his last three years with the club out on loan, first to Sunderland then to Juventus. Bendtner left Arsenal when his contract expired and signed with Wolfsburg on a free transfer.

His Denmark national team failed to qualify for this summer's European Championships after being eliminated in a playoff by Sweden.

With Bendtner available on a free transfer, Univision reported that Atlanta United is not the only club that has approached his management.
