Once upon a time in 1996, Atlanta played host to the Summer Olympics. Nigeria won the gold medal in the men's soccer tournament that year. Twenty years later, the Nigerian Olympic soccer team returns to Atlanta to help prepare for another run at the gold.
In a few week's time, the 2016 Summer Olympics will commence in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To warm-up for the tournament, Nigeria will play the Charleston Battery tonight at Silverbacks Park in a friendly match. This is a huge chance for soccer fans in Atlanta to see some fantastic young talent. Not only are the Nigeria U-23's stacked with international quality youngsters like Roma's Umar Sadiq and Liverpool's Taiwo Awoniyi, but several Atlanta United prospects will be one hand to feature in the match for the Battery.
Alex Tambakis, Andrew Carleton, and Jeffrey Otoo are all scheduled to play against Nigeria. There are also reports of other Atlanta United academy players possibly being involved. If you're patiently waiting for 2017, this will be a huge opportunity to see a few players that could become stars for the city's MLS team in the future.
The United boys won't be the only local talent on display. South Georgia's Tormenta FC will have a representative with Nigeria as midfielder Rashid Alarape will join the Super Eagles for tonight's friendly. This will truly be a display of Georgia soccer.
