More suitors for Mr. Martino?

In case you missed it, news broke last night via ESPN’s John Sutcliffe that Gerardo Martino interviewed with Club América in Mexico City. Las Águilas are now looking for their 21st coach since 2002 after firing Ignacio Ambriz. They are 4-3-3 in the Torneo Clausura, sitting in fifth place.

For Club América, that performance is not good enough. This is a club that is not afraid to spend money in order to be the best. Grupo Televisa runs the club in a similar way to George Steinbrenner ran the New York Yankees. Go win, and if you don’t do that quickly enough, see you later.

Atlanta United would be a completely different experience, and one that should appeal to a man who enjoys the coaching side of management. There are very few opportunities in the world to build a club of this magnitude from scratch. He won’t have the history to look back at, he won’t have the same level of expectations that he would have in Mexico City.

As a student of Marcelo Bielsa, Martino should relish the opportunity to put his theories into practice. He would have that opportunity in Atlanta more so than anywhere else in the world.

We’ll see what happens next, stay tuned...

Join us tonight for our #ATLSoccer chat on Facebook Live. It starts at 8pm, bring your questions regarding Martino or any other Atlanta soccer topics and we’ll discuss. See you then!
