Club America has hired an Argentine, but thankfully it’s not “Tata” Martino. According to ESPNFC.com, Ricardo La Volpe has told them he is set to be announced as the new head coach of the Liga MX giant.
This will be a huge sigh of relief to Atlanta United fans, as reports surfaced earlier in the week that Club America had contacted Martino in regards to the vacant managerial position. “Tata” Martino reportedly turned down the offer because he has his sights set on the Atlanta United job, even tweaking his coaching staff to fit the move.
La Volpe has 24 years of experience managing in Mexico, which includes stints at nine different clubs and the Mexican national team from 2002 to 2006. In fact, this won’t be La Volpe’s first time with Club America as he managed the team for a short period in 1996.
Hey Atlanta United FC, do that thing where you tweet out a welcome video for a new acquisition. Have it say “Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is United” or whatever. Or better yet, get #TikiTata started.
