Report: Atlanta United has held no discussions with Martin Demichelis

Nope.

Despite many reports and rumors from both Argentina and Spain, it doesn’t appear as if veteran defender Martin Demichelis is heading to Atlanta United.

The 36-year-old center back left Espanyol this week on mutually agreeing that his one-year contract did not have to be honored any longer. Many outlets stated that the Argentinian would be coming to Atlanta to join his former national team manager, Tata Martino, as he begins his MLS adventure.

However, Doug Roberson of the AJC reports that those rumors are completely false and in fact, according to his sources, the club hasn’t even talked with Demichelis about playing for them.

With all due respect to Demichelis, who has had some fine years in his career, he’s way past his prime. His legs are shot and signing him would make very little sense for Atlanta United as they already have several aging defenders on their roster already.

As of now, it looks like this rumor is dead in the water.
