It seems like so long ago, yet also feels like last week. The opening match of the season, Atlanta United’s first-ever MLS match. That amazing March night at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The New York Red Bulls came in and spoiled the occasion by getting the full three points after honestly getting outplayed by a newly formed Atlanta roster playing their first competitive game with each other.
Nevertheless, both teams have been through a wild and crazy season that’s seen them both qualify for the playoffs. We meet again on the second-to-last weekend of the season, this time in the
Big Apple Garden State! Seven points separate the two teams with the Five Stripes sitting on 53 points, good enough for 3rd place in the East and the artists formerly known as the Metrostars on 46 and in 6th. If the season ended now (it doesn’t, but just play along okay?) these two teams would meet in the first-round playoff.
Atlanta are coming off their first-ever defeat in Mercedes-Benz Stadium when a shorthanded lineup fell in dramatic and bitter fashion to Minnesota United. The Red Bulls beat the Vancouver Whitecaps in their last outing before this mini-international break to clinch the final playoff spot in the East. The Red half of NY has a very nice 9-2-5 record at home, while Atlanta are a mediocre 4-6-6 on the road.
This will be a tough match and with playoff positioning still up for grabs, it’s important they get a good result. FOX Sports 1 will televise the match nationally. Glen Davis and Stuart Holden will be on the call with Katie Witham on the sidelines.
