The light at the end of the tunnel is here. One more match left in this extra-grueling stretch of schedule for Atlanta United. One more midweek against Minnesota United will off us a chance to see just how deep this team really is. Throughout this entire stretch of two matches a week for three weeks, we’ve wondered when Tata Martino would decide to rest some of his top players. It turns out this is that game.
Miguel Almiron and Greg Garza are already sidelined with injuries. Brad Guzan and Josef Martinez are unavailable due to international duty. Tata also told Doug Roberson of the AJC that Anton Walkes will also sit for this one to get some rest. That potentially leaves five regular starters out for this match.
We all know what happened the only other time these two teams met. Josef scored a hat trick in the snow as the Five Stripes obliterated Minnesota for their first-ever win in Major League Soccer. It was a good day. With another win over their United foes, Atlanta would eliminate the Loons from playoff contention. That would be a nice little bonus to go along with what’s already been a fantastic and memorable season. It won’t be easy as Minnesota will be out for revenge and Atlanta will be shorthanded, but hopefully they can get it done.
