Atlanta United announced a surprising bit of news on Wednesday. The club confirmed that it has agreed to a multi-year contract with left back Greg Garza. This means he’ll remain with the team for several more years to come after spending the inaugural season on loan with the Five Stripes.
“Greg was an integral part of our first-year success and we’re happy we were able to bring him back on a permanent basis,” Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a press release. “He’s a natural fit for our style of play and in addition to his on-field performance, which was recognized by his place in the MLS All-Star Game, Greg has become an important figure in the locker room.”
Garza, 26, was a vital part of Atlanta United’s first-ever roster, manning the left flank and earning a place on the MLS All-Star team in the process. He appeared in 26 matches and scored two goals while providing five assists throughout the season.
His signing answers the first big question of the offseason for Atlanta United and fills a spot in the lineup for years to come. This is a great way to kick off the offseason!
