Michael Parkhurst named first captain in Atlanta United history

Congrats, Michael!

An historic announcement was made by Atlanta United on Friday. Tata Martino has decided that veteran centerback Michael Parkhurst will serve as the team’s first ever captain for the 2017 season.

The team announced the decision on Twitter using a cool video of Carlos Bocanegra and Tata breaking the news to Michael. Watch that here:

There were several options for the role on this overall young team. Chris McCann or Kenwyne Jones could’ve also been considered, I’m sure. But, in the end, Parkhurst was the choice and a very good one. His vast experience in MLS will allow him to help the other players from all over the world adapt to the league.

He’s a veteran of MLS, Europe, and even the international level and he’ll make a great captain as he leads from the backline. This decision also solidifies him as a starter in Tata’s lineup. While that may have been an obvious move, it’s clear now with this announcement. Congrats, Michael. We’re sure you’ll serve Atlanta well.
