The Charlotte Independence released their preseason schedule today, and interestingly enough, they’re scheduled to play Atlanta United on March 19th at 2 p.m.
The match is a closed-door scrimmage that will likely be played at United’s training complex.
When Charlotte head coach Mike Jeffries talked about the schedule, he mentioned that the Columbus Crew, who the USL side kick their preseason off against, plan on fielding a reserve team. Considering Atlanta has a match against the Chicago Fire the day before, expect them to do something similar. Perhaps unused subs from the Fire match, as well as academy players, will get some minutes against a professional club.
The Charlotte Independence are heading into their third season, and are the official affiliate of the Colorado Rapids. They finished 5th in the USL’s Eastern Conference last season.
This will be Atlanta United’s third match against a lower division side from the southeast, including the Chattanooga FC and Charleston Battery fixtures.
