Atlanta United play their fourth and final preseason match tonight against their USL affiliate, the Charleston Battery. Depending on how the earlier match between the Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew plays out, United could be playing for their first ever trophy. They currently sit in second place and need the Crew to drop points to the Sounders to have a shot at lifting the CCC grand prize.
We already know that Tata Martino will likely be trotting out a reserve-heavy lineup and that’s perfectly fine. The guys who have worked hard all preseason deserve their chance to play and getting ready for the MLS season is much more important than winning a preseason trophy, but it sure would be sweet to win the first ever tournament you participate in as a franchise.
Enjoy tonight’s match because it’ll be a full eight days before the team plays again, but the good thing about the long wait is, the next time they step on the field it’ll be at Bobby Dodd Stadium culminating three years of hard work. I’m getting chill bumps just typing it...
