What a day it was for Atlanta United on Sunday in snowy Minnesota. While the club’s inaugural match had all the glitz and glamour off the field of 55,000 people, the second match of the season saw the team perform on the field and overcome some extraordinary conditions to pick up their first ever win in MLS.
Like we saw several times in preseason, the Five Stripes got off to a flying start thanks to the brilliant combination of Miguel Almiron and Josef Martinez. The former had space on the left side of the field the whole first half and played in the latter just three minutes into the match. Martinez made no mistake with his finish and United were off and running from there.
Before Minnesota knew what hit them it was 3-0. A Minnesota penalty made Atlanta sweat for a short while, but a stunning strike from Almiron, his second of the match, put the match out of reach for good. Just the the Red Bulls did to them, United played spoiler for Minnesota’s home opener and looked really good while doing so.
