Tata Martino had never coached in snow before Sunday

A nice way to get introduced to the wintery environment...

What a day it was for Tata Martino and his squad on Sunday as they dominated their fellow Expansion side Minnesota United and came away with Atlanta United’s first ever victory in MLS. They did this in a winter storm with TCF Bank Stadium being covered in snow for the full 90-minute match. It not too uncommon to see snow in MLS, especially at the beginning of the season, but it’s something new to Martino.

The veteran manager, who’s managed in matches all over the world, revealed to reporters in his post-match press conference that this was the first time he’s ever managed in such conditions.

“I was a little worried about learning how those games go because I’ve never coached a game in the snow before. And above all in the second half, I thought we played a simple game, a really serious game and we avoided problems.”

Six goals and a totally dominant performance is a great way to get initiated to the snowy conditions. Ironically, it was Minnesota who struggled with the snow and it showed.

Atlanta United’s schedule calls for a trip up to Canada for a two-game stretch against Toronto and Montreal in early April. That seems to be the only remaining threat for snow remaining on the schedule.
