The saga of Yamil Asad’s red card against Toronto appears to be over from an on-field perspective. Atlanta United’s winger will sit out the mandatory one game after being sent off for the elbowing incident against Toronto FC, but won’t face any further discipline.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee reviews every major call and decision in the league regarding fouls and punishment and have deemed that no further discipline was needed. Asad faced a further two games on the sidelines if found guilty of violent conduct.
MLS confirm that Atlanta United didn’t appeal the red card. It’s probably the smart move. While the play appeared totally accidental, there’s no denying that some contact to Eriq Zavaleta’s head. It would’ve been very hard for the DisCo to overturn the call completely with the league cracking down on head injuries.
It’s a lesson learned for everyone involved, hopefully. There’s no word on if Toronto FC were punished for showing replays on their video board or not.
Of note to Atlanta United, Montreal Impact’s appeal of Marco Donadel’s red card has failed. He will miss this weekend’s match.
