It’s been over a month since Atlanta have been able to watch their favorite soccer team firsthand. That all changes today as Atlanta United play host to D.C. United. Hopefully this all-United bash goes as well as the Five Stripes’ first one against Minnesota did.
Atlanta are coming off of a solid win against Real Salt Lake in which their performance wasn’t their best but they gritted out a win anyways. The goals are still going in for Atlanta since leaving for that long road trip, but their ability to hang onto possession and make clean, crisp passes around the field has steady dwindled. Their overall play has gotten progressively sloppier since that second home match domination against Chicago. Possibly some home cooking will get them back to their precise ways.
Meanwhile, D.C. have eight points through their first seven matches and sit in 9th place in the Eastern conference. They’ve averaged less than a goal per game with just six overall scored so far with 12 conceded. U.S. international Steve Birnbaum is out for the match with concussion issues. This would leave the the aging and slowing Bobby Boswell in defense asked to deal with the Atlanta front line.
On paper, this looks like a great chance for Atlanta United to pick up full points, but nothing is taken for granted. This match will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. ET and air on FOX Sports 1. J.P. Dellacamera and Alexi Lalas will be on the call with Katie Witham reporting from the sideline.
