The Charleston Battery will be paying a visit to Atlanta next week to face the Silverbacks in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. The Silverbacks easily knocked out PDL side SC United Bantams by a 4-1 count this evening thanks to a pair of goals in the first and second halves.
Atlanta United’s USL affiliate has been in great form to open league play, starting the 2017 campaign with a 5-1-1 mark. Their 16 points is good for first in the league’s Eastern Division, two points clear of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Part of Charleston’s success has been due to the play of United loanee Romario Williams, whose six league goals puts him in a three-way tie for first. Charleston’s 16 goals is three shy of league leaders San Antonio FC.
Along with Williams, Jeffrey Otoo, who came on as a substitute in his lone appearance thus far, could see some time. Alex Tambakis, who has started in net three times and has conceded three goals in split duties with Odisnel Cooper with Charleston, and Mikey Ambrose are on Atlanta’s active roster and will not be available for the Battery next week.
Charleston will certainly be the favorite next week to punch its ticket to the third round. Outside of that, it will be a great chance for United fans to come out and see some of the Five Stripes’ loaned out players up close and personal, as well as support Atlanta’s affiliate club from South Carolina.
