In Atlanta United’s 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon there was almost a Goal of the Year candidate scored. The play by Atlanta began with Yamil Asad devastating a Timbers defender with a backheel flick pass that nutmegged his marker and found its way to Miguel Almiron. All in one motion, Almiron flicked the ball past his defender to get a chance on goal.
Ultimately the chance ended with a save after Almiron tried (correctly, in my opinion) to center a pass to Julian Gressel in the box for a tap-in. It was a chance that went begging, but it makes for a very pleasurable GIF to watch over and over again. Asad’s backheel flick was also named “Pass of the Week” by MLSSoccer’s Matt Doyle, so there’s also that.
It’s good to have Asad back on the field where he belongs and it’s good to see him linking up with Miggy to create some magic.
