Miguel Almiron voted MLS Player of the Week

Hat-trick hero earns league honors

MLS: Houston Dynamo at Atlanta United FC Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Miguel Almiron has been voted MLS Player of the Week after his hat-trick performance against the Houston Dynamo.

Almiron is the second Atlanta United player to win Player of the Week honors, both earning the award after scoring hat-tricks. Josef Martinez was awarded Player of the Week after his three-goal performance against Minnesota United in March.

The 23-year-old Paraguayan opened Atlanta United’s account against Houston in the 30th minute after receiving the ball from Yamil Asad, opening space on his left and rocketing a shot over Houston goalkeeper Joe Willis. Almiron added his second in the 42nd minute after Asad laid a pass off to him, dribbled past two defenders, and shot the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal. He completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute after Tito Villalba was taken down in the box for a penalty kick.

The selections are made by a panel of journalists from the National Association of Soccer Reporters consisting of members of print, radio, television and online media.
