Josef Martinez returns to training for Atlanta United

Some good news.

Atlanta United could soon have its leading scorer back on the field. Doug Roberson of the AJC reports that Josef Martinez has returned to training this week. Tata Martino told Roberson that the 23-year-old striker along with veteran winger Jacob Peterson are back in training and that he hopes to have them available as soon as possible.

Using some common sense, it’s hard to imagine Martinez being fully match fit and ready to play a part for Atlanta this weekend against New York City FC. He’s been out of action for almost six weeks and will need at least a week to regain some fitness to get back up to match speed. Next weekend’s clash against the Portland Timbers might make sense for the much-awaited return to the field for the Venezuelan.

Having Peterson back is good news for this weekend. He’s only been out for a couple of weeks and would likely be able to play if needed. With Yamil Asad serving a one-match suspension, winger depth is very concerning and Peterson could help fill that void.
