Another matchday is upon us. The ninth of this inaugural 2017 season. After a loooong week of assessing the damage from a disappointing loss, it’s time to do it all over again. Atlanta United travel up north to the Big Apple, the Empire State, the yada yada “we’re the center of the universe” New York City to take on Manchester City II.

In what has been dubbed ‘MLS’ most important game’ by one publication, this match has the makings of a true slugfest. In one corner, the high-spending glamour farm team of a Premier League club. In the other, the new kids on the block trying to create something special from scratch.

NYCFC (4-3-1, 13 points) are coming off an impressive 3-2 away victory at Columbus Crew SC as Atlanta (3-3-2, 11 points) try to rebound from the aforementioned surprising defeat to D.C. United. It should be a fascinating battle of managerial wits and tactics with the undertones of two different franchise philosophies.

Led by high-profile foreign managers in Patrick Vieira and Tata Martino, these two teams aren’t too dissimilar. Both were started from scratch by very wealthy and ambitious owners with lofty expectations early in their existence. The on-field product is where the divide can be seen. Aging, expensive stars like David Villa and Andrea Pirlo were brought in by NYCFC to put butts in the seats and try to find early success. Meanwhile, Atlanta United have gone the opposite route, buying three young DP’s just entering their best years.

Atlanta feature a high-pressing, fast-paced style, while NYCFC are more calculated in their build-up, often relying on counter-attacking with their main goal threat David Villa the focal point. What type of match will these two opposing styles and philosophies create when jammed onto the smallest field in the league? It should be a very interesting day of soccer.

This match kicks off at 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen in a number of different ways. Univision will have the match on TV. It’ll also be streamed in English on Univision Deportes’ Facebook Page.
