An Atlanta United academy player has scored in a World Cup! Lagos Kunga came on as a late substitute in the United States’ 6-0 win over New Zealand in the U-20 World Cup Round of 16. It was his third appearance of the tournament and undoubtedly his most memorable as he would celebrate it with a goal in stoppage time to cap off the dominant performance.
Admittedly, the match result was already well-decided by then but that won’t take away from the 18-year-old’s moment. He collected a pass in the box and calmly slotted a great finish past the Kiwis’ goalkeeper.
Kunga’s story is an amazing one. To see him representing Atlanta on the biggest stage for his age group is something special. For him to cap it with a goal is even better. Perhaps we’ll see him doing that for Atlanta United and even the USMNT one day. Congrats, Lagos!
