Atlanta United are back on the grind this weekend in the Windy City with a rematch with the Chicago Fire. A trip to Chicago means a lot more now than it would have in March as the Fire’s acquisition of Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has completely changed the outlook of their season.
Literally days after Atlanta stomped Chicago, 4-0, at Bobby Dodd Stadium on March 18 the club announced they had signed Schweini from Manchester United. Ever since, they’ve been on fire, shooting up the Eastern conference standings, all the way up to second currently.
That was a bit of a turning point for Atlanta too as that’s the last time we saw Josef Martinez suit up for the Five Stripes. His two goals that day had everyone wondering about the possibilities for this season. Would Josef break the MLS goals record? Would Atlanta ever lose another match again??? — Well, an injury on international duty just a few days later threw a wrench into those dreams.
Ironically, it could be the Fire, nearly three months after the fact, that Josef makes his return against. Martinez is back in training and Tata Martino said he’d likely play in some fashion against Chicago. With the likely absence of Miguel Almiron in the starting lineup, after playing 70 minutes for Paraguay on Thursday, Josef’s firepower will be desperately needed.
Coming off a loss in Vancouver, Atlanta could really use a positive result in this one. However, it won’t be easy as the Fire have transformed into a powerhouse in the suddenly stacked Eastern conference.
