Atlanta United will be without the services of Carlos Carmona on Wednesday when they travel to take on D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Against Columbus Crew SC on Saturday night, Carmona picked up his fifth yellow card of the season on a foul in the 21st minute and will serve a one-game ban for yellow card accumulation, per MLS rules.
Carmona has appeared in all but one match for Atlanta this season. The last match he missed was United’s 6-1 win over Minnesota United on March 12, and that was due to disciplinary reasons as well: he received a one-game ban due to a red card he was shown in the 88th minute of the team’s inaugural match against the New York Red Bulls. Also as a result of his fifth yellow, Carmona will be fined $250. If he picks up three more during the course of the season, he will be suspended once more and the fine goes up to $500.
When asked if he had any thought as to who would take Carmona’s place in the lineup, Tata Martino said that he would begin to start that decision process on Sunday. Julian Gressel started the season at that spot, but with him playing so well on the right wing, there’s a chance we could possibly see Chris McCann at Carmona’s midfield slot on Wednesday.
