The Charleston Battery's top goalscorer Romario Williams was named in the 23 man squad named by Jamaica for the 2017 Gold Cup.
Williams, who scored goals #12 and 13 on the season in the Battery's 6-1 drubbing of Toronto FC II on Saturday, should be available for the Battery’s clash with Tampa Bay this coming weekend before joining the Raggae Boys as they open the tournament against Curacao on July 9.
It’s a little bittersweet for him, as he’ll miss at least two games against Louisville and St. Louis, whilst possibly also missing a third against Tampa Bay away on the 22nd, and more if Jamaica get through to the knockout stages.
Nonetheless, the opportunity to represent your country at a major tournament doesn’t come around every day, and he’ll be looking to make his mark on such a big stage.
The striker has been involved in 44% of the Battery’s impressive 34 goals this year, and his absence may go hand in hand with the announcement of the signing of Lagos Kunga, who can bring his own goalscoring touch after scoring 10 in 21 games for Atlanta United’s Under 18 side.
Romario played for Jamaica previously this year against the US and was recently called up for a friendly before his Gold Cup inclusion, and so coupled with his form, the call up should come as little surprise.
We’ll be keeping an eye on Romario throughout the tournament, and wish him the best of luck.
