Welcome to what is the yearly soccer equivalent of Super Bowl weekend, with the UEFA Champions League final playing appetizer to the main course of Vancouver Whitecaps hosting Atlanta United. It’s been a great few weeks to be a fan of the Five Stripes. The past two matches has seen the return of the high-flying, exciting attack that we all fell in love with in the first three matches of the season.
The return of Josef Martinez looks to be on the precipice of finally happening as Tata Martino confirmed that the striker would be traveling with the team to Vancouver, giving most people the impression that he’d get a spot on the bench.
With a win, Atlanta United would likely climb above the red line and into a playoff spot, if that means anything to you in early June. For the first time in a long time, the Eastern conference is much strong and more competitive than the West. While normally a trip to Cascadia would be something to fear, this season it could possibly be viewed as a relief from the cutthroat Eastern conference. Atlanta have already made two trips to the Northwest, drawing both matches.
The Whitecaps lost in their last league match when a horrible penalty call went against them against D.C. United. It should be a good test for Atlanta United. The saying goes that you take a point away from home and three at home, however there are some away matches that you should at least threaten to get the full three and this is one of them.
