Atlanta United traveled to Vancouver on Saturday for a tilt against the Whitecaps and came away empty handed. It was a similar story we’ve seen play out several times this season, Atlanta dominate possession but fail to create many chances and the other team strikes when they get their chances. Unlike the D.C. United match where counter-attackers were the culprit, this time it was set pieces and specifically the ridiculously superior athleticism of Kendall Waston inside the 18-yard box. Atlanta had no answer for him in the air and their fate was sealed.
Men of the Match: Julian Gressel & Greg Garza
For the first time since I’ve been doing these community ratings (I’ve done them for several different blogs) we have a tie. Not a “too close to call” tie. A literal tie. Nine freaking decimal places couldn’t separate Gressel and Garza. Here’s the proof:
It’s fitting that these two are tied because they linked up for the only goal Atlanta United managed. Gressel with a truly gorgeous ball across the face of goal and Garza with the lovely finish. We’re not going out like that. This is our extra time and/or penalties. Below will be a poll. Pick a side Gressel or Garza. Who should get it?
