The Atlanta Silverbacks defeated Asheville City SC 1-0 at home at Silverbacks Park to advance to the Conference Semifinals in the 2017 NPSL Playoffs.
The game, which was originally scheduled for 3:30pm, was delayed for 40 minutes due to inclement weather. The Silverbacks enjoyed most of the chances in the first half, sending shots off the bar and just wide of the goal. Despite conceding a majority of the possession in the half, Asheville still looked dangerous on the counter. The two teams went into the half tied 0-0.
The Silverbacks continued to press in the second half, challenging the Asheville defense with more shots. The breakthrough came in the 68’ when a corner taken by Silverbacks captain Mitch Garcia was cleared from the Asheville box, but only as far as Joao Johanning Mora. The forward blasted a shot on the volley that rocketed past the City goalkeeper and into the net. Asheville turned up the pressure, but were unable to find an equalizer. The match ended a 1-0 victory for the Silverbacks.
Asheville qualified for the playoffs in their first NPSL season, but were unable to find their first playoff victory. Regardless, the team (and supporters, who showed up in force) can be proud of their inaugural season.
Atlanta will travel to New Orleans on Friday to play the Southeast-Conference leading New Orleans Jesters. The Silverbacks will have the opportunity to avenge their two regular season matches against the Jesters in the Southeast Conference Semifinal on Friday at 7:00pm.
