Here we go again. Yet another Atlanta United matchday is upon us, the last one for a little while, actually. After breaking their away duck in Columbus, the Five Stripes return home to play the San Jose Earthquakes after a very quick turnaround to head into the Gold Cup break.
This will be Atlanta’s eighth match in less than a month and in that time they’ve climbed above the red playoff line and now have a four point cushion to play with. A win tonight would be a great way to enter the two-week break. With a double header against Orlando City — a team who sits above Atlanta in the standings — awaiting on the other side, they cannot afford a slip up against the Quakes tonight.
San Jose have only won twice on the road this season but are coming off a dramatic stoppage time winner by Shea Salinas to defeat their rivals, LA Galaxy, on Saturday night. Everyone’s favorite American striker Chris Wondolowski will be looking to introduce himself to Atlanta United with a goal or two.
Can Atlanta continue their momentum on into the break and celebrate this patriotic holiday with a win? We’re about to find out.
