Tap. Tap. Tap. Is this thing on? How does this work? — It’s been so long since we’ve seen actual soccer, it’s going to take a bit of time to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully that won’t be the case for Tata Martino’s side as they come face-to-face with their archnemesis, D.C. United.
Statistically the absolute worst team in the league, D.C. have had Atlanta United’s number both times they’ve played this season. In an otherwise phenomenal inaugural season, Ben Olsen’s team has been the massive dark spot on the radar for some reason. There are many depressing scenarios about where the Five Stripes would be sitting in the East standings had they won against D.C., but we’ll leave those alone as they don’t help anyone.
It’s a mixed bag for Atlanta as far as current form goes heading into this match. Yes, they are riding an impressive six-match unbeaten streak, but they haven’t played in 16 days. Who knows how the layoff will affect the team? One thing that seems to have happened during that time is that players have gotten healthy. Both Josef Martinez and Greg Garza were spotted training on Saturday. Will both be in the starting lineup? We can only hope, but it looks possible at the least.
Frankly, I just want to beat D.C. United. On paper this is a complete mismatch, but they’ve beaten us twice. This aggression will not stand, man. We’re fresh and rejuvenated. It’s time to get the job done and set up the playoff push for the rest of the season.
