Atlanta United and Sporting Kansas City meet for the first time ever tonight at Children’s Mercy Park. Entering MLS play this weekend, SKC are top of the Western conference table while the Five Stripes hang on to fifth in the East with a four-point cushion above the red line.
This will not be an easy match-up for Atlanta. Going on the road to one of the best teams in the league with a stout defense without arguably your most important player in Josef Martinez and one of your best defenders in Greg Garza... Needless to say, this one is a “hope for a point” type of situation. Anything more and you are in dreamland.
You can expect Atlanta to play a little more cautious in this match. Think back to the away match in Columbus when we saw a more pragmatic defensive/counter-attack approach to the game. There’s a good chance we’ll see that type of style brought back in hopes of replicating that fine result.
