Atlanta United return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to play the penultimate home match of the regular season. The New England Revolution are this week’s opponents as they return to Atlanta for the first time since one of the most lopsided games in MLS history.
The Five Stripe faithful will not soon forget the Rev Wedding (TM), a match that saw Atlanta demolish New England, 7-0, thanks to two first half red cards.
That bit of history is meaningless now as Atlanta United are fighting tooth and nail for the Supporters’ Shield while the Revs still have a glimmer of playoff hope, trailing sixth place Montreal Impact by five points with four matches left to play.
Tata Martino’s side can not afford to drop many, if any points in their last three games with the Red Bulls just one point behind them in the race for the Shield. The team has yet to lose back-to-back games this season and now would be the worst possible time to do so.
Who will Tata choose for his lineup after the embarrassing and rather putrid showing against the Red Bulls? We shall see.
