The Daily Dirt February 12, 2018: habemus presidentum

The USSF election and news and notes from the weekend

Well the USSF Presidential election was held on Saturday. The new president is Carlos Cordeiro, the current Vice President of an organization that failed to reach the world cup and is otherwise filled with problems. I have something more fulsome to go into this over on StarsandStripesFC.com later today, but he deserves a chance to implement his plan and should be judged on the results of his tenure - not who he is as a person or who he isn’t compared to other candidates.

The day was filled with intrigue and machinations as after two rounds it looked like a stalemate of sorts was developing with Kathy Carter and Carlos Cordeiro each taking about 35% of the vote, Kyle Martino and Eric Wynalda taking a bit over 10% each, and the other candidates splitting the remaining votes. Then, in an act of mercy for the viewers and those of us covering the event, Carter’s voters broke for Cordeiro and he came away with about 69% of the vote.

Who knows what will happen in the next four years, but it is a crucial time for USSF. The country has a chance to co-host the World Cup, the Women’s World Cup is next year, and another summer Olympics cycle will take place.

Anyway, onto the Dirt...

Domestic

Someone is taking their election loss in stride:

Charles Boehm has a really good run down, or at least a list of questions that is brought up, from the politicking behind the scenes at the election if you are interested in that kind of thing.

It might have been a little lost in all of the news last week, but Sporting KC opened a world class training center.

International

The W-League final is set with Melbourne City facing off against Sydney FC.

Exciting U.S. talent Landon Donovan made his debut in LigaMX debut for Leon in a 2-1 win against Puebla.

It’s only slightly surprising that Fox doesn’t do this for Christian Pulisic.

While MLS teams are releasing their... kits - the best strip of all time dropped:

New Rule

Tactical fouls, a necessary part of the game or something that should be officiated out of existence? Michael Cox says it’s time for them to end.

Goals of the weekend

I mean, this is low hanging fruit... Josef “Scores a goal every 60 minutes” Martinez started things off in the 58th minute, then LGP got eaten alive by a 2nd division forward, then Darlington Nagbe showed why Atlanta busted open the allocated money piggy bank with a great assist to Brandon Vazquez. and finally Romario Williams cleaned up a sloppy clearance from Lake Music City to make it 3-1. These were fun.

This might be the most complicated 1-2 played in history

Not a goal, but still a rad move:
