Remember the last time Atlanta United matched up against the Columbus Crew? Yeah, me neither.
The Carolina Challenge Cup begins today. The first of three matchdays sees the Five Stripes take on their Eastern conference foes for the fifth overall time in the very short history of the franchise. These two met in the same preseason tournament last year with the Crew coming from behind to win thanks to a Federico Higuain brace.
While results are meaningless in a competition like this, the team will be hoping to start rounding into form as the regular season is just two weeks away.
It’s unclear if either Michael Parkhurst, Tito Villalba or Franco Escobar will be available for this one after missing the first preseason match against Nashville with injury. Outside of those three question marks, you should see a first-choice lineup trotted out by Tata Martino. Hopefully in this match, we’ll get to see fair playing conditions and get a better picture of how far along the team is in their preparations.
