Welcome back to another episode of Atlanta United preseason action, where dreams are broken and pessimism reigns supreme. After an uninspiring loss to the Columbus Crew on Saturday, the Five Stripes look for an improved performance against Minnesota United tonight.
Results are a secondary concern here, but the way in which Atlanta lost to Columbus was a bit disheartening. Tata Martino’s midfield was overrun on multiple occasions and things just looked ... bad.
Hopefully a healthier selection of players will help solve some of the team’s problems. Doug Roberson of the AJC reported earlier this week that Tito Villalba, Michael Parkhurst, Franco Escobar and Greg Garza are all back in training with the team after missing time.
While it’s indisputable that the team needs to add some depth to their midfield, the returns of Parkhurst and Escobar will allow Jeff Larentowicz to push up to his preferred holding midfield role and should add some normalcy to the team’s shape.
Here’s to hoping for a more encouraging 90 minutes this time out.
