Miguel Almiron’s strike nominated for MLS Goal of the Week

Almiron’s first goal of the season earns a GOTW nomination.

Miguel Almiron’s goal against D.C. United has earned him a Goal of the Week nomination for Week 2 in Major League Soccer. Almiron’s effort, which was Atlanta United’s second of the game, saw him open his 2018 account in a thunderous manner.

Atlanta shook off their opening day defeat to the Houston Dynamo, with a dominant victory of D.C. United in the home opener on Sunday. While the team’s performance was exactly what fans will be expecting this season, Almiron’s goal will be the stand out moment in their 3-1 win.

After a first half goal from Josef Martinez, Atlanta went in search of a second goal to give them breathing space. Julian Gressel sent his ball across the edge of the box found Almiron, who had all the time in the world to set himself before firing a laser into the top corner.

Almiron’s effort flew like an arrow into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless as he stretched to keep it out. Atlanta went on to add a third minutes later, securing a 3-1 win and their first points of the 2018 campaign. It may not have even been his best goal in an Atlanta United jersey, but Almiron added yet another glorious goal to his collection.

The nomination for Goal of the Week is thoroughly deserved for Miguel Almiron, and Five Stripes fans can vote for his effort here, on Major League Soccer’s website.
