Josef Martinez left Atlanta United’s training session Wednesday in pain and in an air cast after an apparent injury to his left arm.
Team officials said the severity of the injury is yet to be determined, and as of right now, the timetable for his return is unknown. Teammates huddled around Martinez as he was tended to by team medical staff.
Martinez has set the league alight with his goalscoring prowess since joining MLS last season. The Venezuelan has bagged 24 goals in his first 25 league games, breaking a league record. However, his season last year was derailed with injuries to his quadriceps and feet. He started only half of Atlanta’s 34 regular season games (17) and made only 20 total appearances. Martinez is approaching several other MLS career goalscoring records in only his second season, such as career hat tricks. He is only one away from tying Stern John and Diego Serna.
