Miguel Almiron voted MLS Player of the Week

Not the first time and probably not the last.

MLS: Montreal Impact at Atlanta United FC Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron was voted as the Alcatel MLS player of the week by the North American Soccer Reporters. Almiron scored twice in Atlanta’s 4-1 victory over the Montreal Impact Saturday.

Almiron is on an absolute tear this season as he’s now tied for the league lead in goals (six) with Josef Martinez and has four assists as well. According to American Soccer Analysis, Almiron leads MLS in expected goals (xG) with 7.19 and xG Chain with 10.43. xG Chain includes all players involved in a buildup leading to a shot and totals the xG from those shots. Basically, it means Almiron’s influence is clearly apparent in more ways than just his goalscoring.

This is Almirón’s third Player of the Week selection after receiving the honor twice in 2017. The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men’s soccer in the United States and Canada, including certain writers for Dirty South Soccer.
