Tata Martino spoke with reporters Friday morning to give us some further insight into the status of Franco Escobar, Chris McCann, and Atlanta United’s goalkeeper situation for Sunday against Orlando City. The coach had good and bad news.
Franco Escobar: He will once again be unavailable. Escobar picked up an injury after colliding with Brad Guzan in the late stages of the match against the Chicago Fire. The defender is still recovering from a chest injury.
Chris McCann: The Irishman is also unavailable for Sunday’s match. McCann is still nursing a hamstring injury.
Alec Kann & Mitch Hildebrandt: The good news is that Martino expects one of the two backup goalkeepers to be ready for Orlando.
“It’s probable that we’ll be able to count on at least one of them,” said Martino.
This is a sigh of relief, as Brad Guzan’s red card suspension and the unknown status of both Kann and Hildebrandt put the club’s goalkeeper situaton in a state of flux for Sunday. Atlanta United 2’s Paul Christensen, who is essentially the first team’s fourth-choice keeper, was forced to enter last Wednesday’s match against Sporting Kansas City after Guzan was sent off in the 34th minute. The updated status of Kann and Hildebrandt is a welcome one.
