Tata Martino: Atlanta United unlikely to sell top stars this season

Never say never, but probably not anytime soon.

Welcome to Silly Season: Summer Edition.

The summer transfer window is rapidly approaching, which means rumors and speculation are starting to ramp up. Atlanta United have already been linked to several players. This week, it was one of their top players getting linked to another club in the region. Club America of Liga MX is said to have interest in MLS Golden Boot leader Josef Martinez. \

Tata Martino quickly dismissed that rumor after the U.S. Open Cup loss on Wednesday, and even went as far as saying that the club in general isn’t in a position that it needs to sell anyone at this point in time.

“There are no words to describe the significance of Club América’s and the grandness of that club,” Martino told 92.9 The Game. “But I also think about the significance of Atlanta. Atlanta isn’t a club that needs money. Atlanta doesn’t need to sell.”

“I’m not saying that they will never leave, but at least in our current position this year it’s not likely,” he said. “We’ll wait until the end of the year to see any type of movement or changes to our roster.

“I honestly don’t believe we will be down a man in the short term.”

Martinez and Miguel Almiron have been the target of transfer rumors a lot over the past year or so. Eventually, one of or both could be sold, but it appears the club’s priority right now is keeping the core together to make a run at trophies.
