Pre-game: The World Cup “break” is over. Atlanta United return to MLS action with a home match against the red-hot Portland Timbers on national TV.
The Five Stripes continue to lead the Eastern conference and Supporters’ Shield standings despite a bit of drop in form, especially at home. In their last competitive match, they were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup at home by the Chicago Fire. Tata Martino’s side will be looking to focus all their efforts on finishing off this promising start in the league.
Meanwhile, the Portland Timbers come to town having not lost a match in their last 10. With six wins in their last eight league matches, it won’t be an easy task for Atlanta to come away with three points in this one. But, if anyone can stop the streaming Timbers it’s the raucous Mercedes-Benz Stadium crowd and Atlanta’s talented attack.
Note: We’re trying something new with our match threads this year. We’ll be updating the post with updates of goals and big moments as they happen. Check back every so often during the match for highlights and commentary.
