15’ - Atlanta United 1, Charleton Battery 0: The Fives Stripes take an early lead thanks to Andrew Carleton’s first competitive goal for the first-team! The 17-year-old picked up possession with space in the midfield, dribbled towards goal and unleashed a right footed shot that Odisnel Cooper couldn’t handle.

Pre-game: Atlanta United and the Charleston Battery meet for the second consecutive year in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Like last season, the Five Stripes host their former USL affiliate at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw.
Keep in mind that this cup competition is very different from your normal MLS schedule. There are special roster limitations that only allow five international players to compete in a single match. That can cause problems for Tata Martino’s lineup decisions, but it also makes for a good chance to see some young players get an opportunity to prove themselves.
Last season, in a losing effort, we got the chance to see Andrew Carleton make his first start for the club against Miami FC. He put on a great performance. We can only hope we see more of the same this season, with the results being a little more favorable.
The narrative surrounding this season has been that Atlanta United’s depth is much improved. Now it’s time for a real test of that depth and to see if that is really the case.
Note: We’re trying something new with our match threads this year. We’ll be updating the post with updates of goals and big moments as they happen. Check back every so often during the match for highlights and commentary.
