Mercedes-Benz Stadium to host Atlanta United’s Round of 16 U.S. Open Cup match

well this will be fun.

Atlanta United has announced that their Round of 16 U.S. Open Cup matchup against the Chicago Fire scheduled for June 20 will be hosted at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The club’s previous two home USOC matches were played at Fifth/Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, but the club apparently saw the opportunity to host an MLS clash at a much larger venue. It’ll be interesting to see if any remaining cup fixtures the club has this season will be hosted at MBS from now on.

The Five Stripes defeated the Charleston Battery 3-0 on June 6 to open their 2018 cup campaign and reach the Round of 16, while the Fire needed a 10-9 penalty shootout win to beat the Columbus Crew after drawing 2-2 in regulation and extra time.

The attendance record for a USOC game is 35,615, which was set by the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field during the 2011 final. I’m sure Atlanta and its fans will do their best to break it.
