You knew it was coming. Josef Martinez’s 28th goal of the season could’ve been a tap-in from less than a yard out into an empty net and it would’ve been nominated for Goal of the Week. When in reality the goal was possibly the most impressive of his Atlanta United career, it was a given that it would get the nod.
Not only was Josef’s record breaking goal a match-winner and not only was it the 9th straight match he’s scored in (tying the MLS record) but it was everything you could want in a Josef Martinez goal. A smart run to peel into space? Check. Composure to skip around a defender and chip the goalkeeper? Check. Downright disrespect to jog past Joe Bendik and stare him down like a professional boxer who just knocked out his bitter rival? Check.
It’s a goal that will be replayed a million times and one that deserves your vote for Goal of the Week. He may have gotten beaten out by Albert Rusnak last week, but it’s redemption time. Click here and make sure he gets his reward.
